A classic book with pictures and diagrams showing trout behavior when taking a dry fly at the top of the water. This book has information and perspective to help you see your dry flies from the trout’s perspective. I purchased this book because it was mentioned in A.K. Best’s Production Fly Tying
BARR John S. Barr and Charlie Craven
Barr Flies: How to tie and fish the Copper John, Barr Emerger, and Dozens of other Patterns, Variations, and Rigs
This book will teach you how to tie the Copper John, and the Jumbo John, and the Barr Emerger, etc. It will also teach you how to fish them. But more importantly, it will give you a history of each pattern. Why the Copper John uses thin skin rather than turkey quill. How John Barr came up with the use of the clear epoxy wing case cover. And dozens of examples of how, where, and why a master fly fisherman fishes as he does. Buy it now if you don’t have it already!

A.K. Best, Production Fly Tying: A Collection of Ideas, Notions, Hints, & Variations on the Techniques of Fly Tying (The Pruett Series)

Most fly tying patterns don’t provide the details of HOW to tie those Wulff wings or the best way to dub a dry fly body. A. K. Best’s book takes each element of the fly: body, tail, wings, etc., and provides detailed instructions about how to tie them. You might as well buy a copy and keep it beside your tying desk, because sooner or later, you’ll need it. Great for beginners and intermediate tiers; even advanced and professional fly tiers will find something here. Buy a copy!
